The late, great John Peel wrote great liner notes - witness these, written for his AND my favorite band, The Fall, for what is probably my favorite Fall album, 1996's Light User Syndrome:

Waleed lives in Baghdad. He wants to hear the Fall. Penelope is a teacher. She lives in Honey Grove, Texas, and heard the Fall on the BBC World Service. Sebastian works in Hamburg. He's a doctor and roams the internet in search of Fall information. Not all the time, mind. Jeff does the same. He lives in Ipswich and has compiled an authoritative Fall discography. William is my son. He said, "Fall LP's don't really need sleeve notes, Dad." He's right, of course.

Brilliant notes for a brilliant album, which I have just tonight recovered after months of missing it terribly. My friend JUDD, who has pretty discriminating (although, ah, somewhat idiosyncratic) tastes, wasn't much of a Fall fan, but liked seeing them live b/c he realized that they're 'kind of like techno' - repetetive grooves and Mark E Smith shouting over it at random intervals. LUS is like that, but more overtly techno-y, lots of beautiful, lo-fi synthage, drum machines, and weird vocal interjections. Plus, it's kind of like Brix (Smith, Mark E's now ex-wife)'s big post-divorce encore in the group, and it definitely has that 'awesomeness' (and chick vox!) that characterizes the Brix albums. Cheers!

UPDATE: Hey, the Fall Lyrics Parade has had a bit of a facelift! Celebrate with this priceless lyric from He Pep!, off LUS:

I believe there's a new drug out.
It's called speed I wrote a song about it
Conceptually a la Bowie.
But it's been lost in the vaults of the record company
By our manager
So instead our new 45 is 'Girlies'

If it doesn't seem priceless to read, imagine MES 'singing' it!! Hahahaha! Cheers!!!
