PSIONICIST

posted Thu, 11-25-04

Do NOT follow the instructions contained in this post on the quasi-occult blot SAVING, do not even imagine yourself following them just to be safe, Nate will pull this weird astral reverse-possession shit on you and I gotta say it is a little freaky! Nate, I know we're bros and stuff but that was seriously unsettling!!!

PS: The sequel to Dungeonmaster was another one-off project with the same dude, I wanted to call it 'Psionicist' (after the AD&D 2nd edition character class with awesome-but-complicated, weird-and-not-particularly-useful psychic powers), but he thought that was a dumb name. Do you think it's a dumb name for, like, a lo-fi (shitty) epic ambient trance music duo? I vote no. Fortunately, I soon came up with a name I liked even more, 'Trance Enforcement', I was kind of imagining us busting in in these cool/retarded 'Trance Enforcement' police-style uniforms and shouting hooks like 'you're going into a trance!,' 'I will maintain the trance!', &c through megaphones over fast lo-fi (shitty) trance-style beats. He thought that both the name and the performance concept were dumb and unacceptable, respectively, so as a compromise we took the name and just wore t-shirts (with 'trance enforcement' written on them! graffitti - shitty! - style) and played more, uh, subdued lo-fi (amateurish) trancey whateverness. I was so wasted that night, I seriously do not remember anything about how that ended up sounding. Ned Milligan took some nice pictures of it, I'll say that much!!

It is sad that with pretty much every show I have ever played, I usually only remember it in this blurry, impressionistic sense... but I suppose that's how performance is, isn't it? Too busy thinking about what to do, no time to reflect on it, didn't even get to stop between songs! But then again, how good is memory at remembering these kinds of details, anyway? And isn't the problem pretty predictable, like, the more shows you play the more they all kind of overlap in your brain? Think about that.

Um, anyway, as I get ready to hit the roadness, let me segue this into a genuine and heartfelt Thanksgiving thanking: I am definitely super thankful for all the music I've had a chance to play over the past few years with people like impenetrable cultist Argentina Nife, real life buddy movie buddy Jonathan M. Schwartz, Aa, the Birthday Boyz, &c, even if I don't really remember it too well, I remember it's always been really awesome! I am the luckiest dude, to get to play music that I like with all these awesome friends in this amazing city at this interesting time, this was kind of all I've ever really wanted to do with my life since I was 14 or so, so I am basically living the dream, I'm like the Phil Chu of this shit! I remember in the aftermath of September 11th thinking, 'is staying in New York really worth the risk of living here?', but today I understand why I never seriously considered leaving, I could never be this happy anywhere else. Thanks music bros and thank you music!!
