[some background in this article on rain forest field recordings]
The 'The "Water Drum"' track is particularly sick, Aa definitely needs a "Water Drum"!! More on the Baka pygmies here from this English ethnomusicologist type guy who gets all Bill Russell about it -
When the Baka play their rhythms and dance, they believe that particular spirits take over the dancers and musicians... On one hand, they know that the dancer is someone dressed up, but that doesn't contradict the idea that it is a real spirit dancing. I can only relate to this in the context of my own experiences. When playing music in a live situation—when you feel it getting really good—it is as if you become separated from the music. The music is being played through you, not by you and the audience is just as much part of that process as you are. I see this as the same process as the Baka ritual dances. The music has the ability to manifest this spirit which everyone is part of and is part of everyone. Different types of music create different spirits. I don’t mean that they manifest a physical entity, but rather an atmosphere or mood.
Steveyve, can you get these albums from the library?!?
