gotham roller derby

Via Flavorpill, this Friday marks the 'premiere expo bout' of the Gotham Girls Roller Derby up in the Bronx!  Friend Arielle (aka 'Rosie Knuckles')* and a host of other chicks on skates have been training (and hitting the PR trail - check out the site!) for this for months, and I'm sure that 3 periods of girl-on-girl roller derby action, bands, and brews should keep the party totally live.  Girl power, girls!

* Arielle did a photo shoot and interview for YM magazine's 'girl athlete of the month' column a couple months ago (for her skating skills!) and she totally name-dropped Aa as her favorite band and said that we were 'hotties' or something along those lines.  YM, dude!!!  It was just about the most exciting news I had heard in my entire life, but then YM apparently decided to discontinue the feature before they could use it.  I'm actually crying a little right now just thinking about it.

UPDATE: Whoa, these chicks are totally going places.  The news page notes that 'Margaret Thrasher' (real name Ashlie Atkinson!  no relation as far as I know) has just landed a role on the FX series "Rescue Me," 'Suzy Hotrod' has just shot a commercial for that 'iPod' thing, and Danielle Riley is appearing in the current Playboy Lingerie issue (her 5th Playboy appearance?!).  I'll... look into it.

UPDATE 2: These girls are very talented.

UPDATE 3: Ms. Thrashkinson notes in the comments that she is also starring in a new Neil LaBute play "Fat Pig" along with Andrew McCarthy and Jeremy Piven, opening in two weeks!  I love Neil LaBute (writer/director of "In the Company of Men" and "Your Friends and Neighbors," two of my favorite movies!), and Andrew McCarthy ("Less Than Zero"! and some more famous, less totally awesome movies) and Jeremy Piven ("PCU", "Old School", &c) obviously rule also.  I will definitely be checking it out.

UPDATE 4: Wow, that Neil LaBute link was informative - dude is a Mormon, and "Nurse Betty" (which he directed/didn't write) was the highest grossing non-animated non-documentary by a 'Latter-day Saint' ever!  Also, his wife is a family therapist!, which I'm sure provides some grist for his amazingly misanthropic work.
