SEEMINGLY EVOLVED

posted Wed, 02-09-05

Funny moment from 502 a few minutes ago:

Aron (upstairs): Hey, did you see the writeup the show got in the Voice?

Me: No, what'd it say?

Aron: It was really nice, they said we've evolved into something like an ADD Boredoms!

Me: (reads copy of the current Village Voice on the table) Dude, it says we 'SEEMINGLY evolved... from INANE HARDCORE!' (laughs)

Aron: (laughs)

I don't know if I'd call it a 'trend' yet but it is interesting to note that the emergent 'critical consensus', such as it is, on our band, at least at this early stage of our life together, seems to be characterized by cautious appreciation ('who are these guys?  they sound kind of cool') insulated by a thin layer of condescension (like 'oh, another band from brooklyn'*). For instance, this blurb from the Village Voice for our show at Tonic, a Voice Pick! [even though it has been CANCELLED, PRE-EMPTED by some guy who was in The Orb that isn't even Alex Patterson, who was NOT a Voice Pick, more later!!]: Aa bring schizophonic drum-circle madness, seemingly evolved from inane hardcore into something like the Boredoms with ADD.

I will note, happily, that there are exceptions, certain rare individuals possessed of infinite reserves of hipness which allow them to trasncend the petty, competitive jockeying of us mere mortals of the scene.  Oh, and I should also note that the 'like the Boredoms with ADD' bit is kind of a big compliment, and a pleasing one to receive, thanks!  Anyway, sorry about the self-absorbtion, but, you know, sometimes this is more of a blogspot blog, and sometimes it's more of a xanga blog, you know? BLOG CITY!!!!

* Thought experiment for Aa broz: Do you think we would get different writeups if we weren't from Brooklyn? What if we were from 'The South', for example?
