Yo amigos, it's a busy day at the office, but that isn't stopping me from getting a thoroughly enjoyable sonic education from Ned Sublette, chronicler of Cuban music and inventor the 'cowboy rhumba' musical style, listening to his "Music of Cuba" guest DJ/interview spot on WFMU's Transpacific Sound Paradise from this past Sunday. It's archived, check it out! Here, he's waxing knowledgably and charmingly enthusiastically for like 3 hours about the forgotten legacy of Cuban music in American popular music and rock and roll history - Whitey wasn't just copping licks from Black blues and R&B musicians, he was assimilating Cuban and Latin rhythms all over the place. "Mambo was the shit back in Elvis's time!" Interesting shit, and awesome sounds for your edification &c - I love TSP!
